How to Download an eBook Using the Chula Vista Library System and an iPad

Do you own a library card? Do you have an iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch? Then, you can get free books to read on those devices. Here are some step-by-step instructions. Before you begin, note that this is a new system, it’s not a “one click” process and that eBooks cost the library as much, if not more in some cases, than a hardbound book. This is why there are much fewer choices and very few copies of each title so, often, the book you want is already checked out. A couple more notes, you only get to download three titles at a time, and you need to choose how many days you want to borrow the title.

These are instructions for downloading an eBook on an Apple product (iPad, iPhone, or iPod Touch). You can also download Kindle books but instructions will differ. It’s a very cumbersome system but the only one available for libraries in San Diego. Ready to put that new iPad to use? Here you go:

Go to the App Store and download the “Overdrive Media Console Library” App on your iDevice.

Click on the “Get Books +” icon at the top right-hand side.

Click on “Add a Library” at the top.

Enter “chula vista” and choose “Chula Vista Public Library” from the list.

Click on the only library shown: “Serra Digital Download Library”

Go to “My Account.”

From the drop down menu, select “Chula Vista Public Library.”

Enter your library ID.

Search, choose a title, go to “Checkout” and click on “Download” or “My Account” and “My Current Checkouts.”

Next, get an “Adobe ID” through the Overdrive App – it’s free. Click on the “Get an Adobe ID.” Just make sure to uncheck the options for promotional contacts)

If these instructions don’t work for you, please leave a comment. Also, if you know how to “return” a book please note it in the comment section. Good luck!
